UFC 149 goes down on Saturday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Canada. Here are Sports Untapped’s best bets for the event.
Let’s start with the main event. Renan Barao is younger, faster and a more-polished striker than Urijah Faber. I’m not saying that it will be a Faber/Aldo II, but Faber is in for a beating. Barao at -200 is an outstanding bet. The bigger question is: what happens to Faber after he loses?
Cheick Kongo can’t seem to win the big fight. He’s lost to Mir, Velasquez and Mark Hunt dating back to 2009, but does well against that next tier of the division. With Big Nog sidelined for this bout the UFC called in Shawn Jordan. Jordan has wins in Strikeforce, Bellator and the UFC, but Kongo is a level above him, at least at present. I love Kongo at -105.
Upset special: Ryan Jimmo is an MFC champion making his debut in the UFC against Anthony Perosh. Jimmo holds wins over ex-UFC vets Sokoudjou, Marvin Eastman and Wilson Gouveia. But Perosh has looked brilliant since dropping weight classes, and has won three straight since his loss to Cro Cop at UFC 110. Jimmo making his UFC debut in front of his home crowd against a crafty vet like Perosh could be too much. I like Perosh +140.
