We hope you took advantage of our free picks for UFC Fight Night 25. We went 4-0, which included our upset special of Jake Ellenberger over Jake Shields. Here are our free picks for UFC 135: Jones vs. Rampage.
Ben Rothwell -340 vs. Mark Hunt +260
It’s kind of amazing that Hunt is even in the UFC. He lost six fights in a row before finally getting a win against Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 127. Rothwell has been on the shelf after ACL surgery since June of 2010. But Rothwell is a very well-rounded fighter who recently unveiled a rather stunning new physique. He’ll win this handily, and he’ll do it wherever he wants to, whether it’s on the ground or standing. Take Rothwell -340.
Nate Diaz -250 vs. Takanori Gomi +190
On paper this is a bad matchup for Gomi. He’s been choked out in two of his three UFC fights, and Diaz is known for his submission game. On the other hand, this a bad matchup on paper for Diaz, too. He has lost his last two fights by decision, and if this one goes the distance, I have little doubt that Gomi will be the one whose hand is raised at the end. I like the upset here, so take Gomi +190.
Travis Browne -450 vs. Rob Broughton +300
Browne got a lot of publicity for his Superman punch KO of Stefan Struve at UFC 130. He’s undefeated at 8-0-1, the only mark on his record being a draw with Cheick Kongo. Broughton has been mainly making his mark in England, and be certain that he has never fought anyone like Hapa Browne before. Browne has speed and power and I suspect that Broughton will make this a brawl. Which will go poorly for him. Take Browne -400.
Matt Hughes +400 vs. Josh Koscheck -600
Certainly Koscheck should be the favorite here, but +600? Before getting KO’d by BJ Penn, Hughes looked excellent against Ricardo Almeida and Renzo Gracie. I think Hughes can win this fight and I think he will. I don’t see Hughes getting knocked out twice in a row and Koscheck seems to shrink in big fights. Take Hughes +400.
Jon Jones -700 vs. Rampage Jackson +400
Rampage was obviously taking this very seriously by making weight with more than a week to spare — something he’s rarely if ever done in the past. And as much as you want to believe that Rampage can beat Jones, how does it happen? It can only happen in the stand-up. That’s a problem because of Jones’ enormous reach and speed advantage. Rampage doesn’t wrestle anymore and looks to connect on big shots. It’s always exciting when Rampage is in the title picture, but Jones is going to knock him out. Take Jones -700.
