Anderson Silva likely to end Chael Sonnen’s hot streak at UFC 117
Trying to predict the outcome of most UFC fights can often be like guessing tomorrow’s lottery numbers as it can all be over in the matter of a few seconds if somebody gets caught in a choke hold and is forced to tap out.
When it comes to the Chael Sonnen (24-10-1) vs Anderson Silva (26-4) middleweight fight at the UFC 117 at Oracle Arena in Oakland, California on Aug. 7th, though, it looks like Silva should take this one. Sonnen basically earned the right to take him on after beating Nate Marquardt by a unanimous decision in UFC 109. But does he really have what it takes to beat Silva?
This could be looked upon as a matchup just to keep Silva active, a tune up perhaps. But these types of fights can often lead to trouble for the favourites as they can take them too lightly and end up getting caught.
Silva’s only fought once in about a year as he took a pretty boring unanimous decision over Brazilian jiu-jitsu artist Damian Maia back at UFC 112 and that was his first bout since last August. But while decisions still go into the record books as a win, most fans love to see knockouts when it comes to the UFC, and that’s probably what Silva’s going to be looking for against Sonnen.
UFC president Dana White’s probably hoping for the same thing as many past UFC headliners that go the distance have either put the fans to sleep or have them booing the combatants in the ring.
It seems’ that Sonnen doesn’t really respect Silva and that could be a big mistake. While Silva’s perhaps not the fighter he used to be, he’s still one of the best mixed martial arts fighters in the world. Sonnen’s a decent fighter as well, but not really in Silva’s class. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t beat him.
Sonnen was basically dismissed by most fans as a legitimate contender after being submitted by Maia last year, but has come back pretty strongly with wins over Yushin Okami, Dan Miller, and Marquardt. So, he’s definitely on a roll right now and has some momentum. But it seems that momentum will probably come to a sudden halt on the 7th as he’s likely to be beaten before the five rounds are over.
The betting odds over at BetUS.com seem to agree as they have Silva listed as a 1/4 (-400) favourite with Sonnen’s odds of a win listed at 3/1 (+300).
