The UFC heads to Memphis for the first time and it’s bringing them a jam-packed card. Let’s take a look at our UFC 107 free picks.
Paul Buentello +105 vs. Stefan Struve -110
This is Buentello’s first fight back in the UFC, and if he truly believes he can eventually get a title shot he must beat Stefan Struve, an impressive young fighter that stands almost 7 feet tall. Struve has exceptional jiu-jitsu and his toughness cannot be questioned. At UFC 99 Struve received a massive cut from Denis Stojnic but fought through it submitted him in the 2nd round. Still, while Buentello may not be the best defensive fighter, he’s experienced enough to get inside on Struve and throw those big bombs. Take Buentello +105
Jon Fitch -325 vs. Mike Pierce +325
Fitch gets Pierce via injuries to both Ricardo Almeida and then Thiago Alves. Let’s hope Pierce stays out of harm’s way before the fight. He certainly won’t be able to once inside the cage. Fitch is a top-level MMA fighter that has beaten Alves, Diego Sanchez and has battled against Georges St. Pierre. Pierce has some power but he has never fought anyone the caliber of Fitch. Vintage Fitch would suggest him out wrestling and pounding on Pierce for 3 rounds. But I think he will knockout Pierce. Take Fitch -325
Clay Guida +180 vs. Kenny Florian -190
This brawl made the cut for my Top 5 Fights Remaining in 2009. Everyone expects a war with plenty of action and swings in momentum. Both fighters are coming of losses: Florian to BJ Penn and Guida to Diego Sanchez. Florian had his shot at BJ. If Guida pulls out the win and so does Sanchez…could we see a rematch of their amazing fight at the Ultimate Fighter Finale 9? Maybe, but I’m getting ahead of myself. Guida went ot go train with Greg Jackson and company to improve his strategy. Is his striking improved enough? Can he ground and pound Florian with his guard and razor-sharp elbows? I think he can and he also can get this to a decision. That favors him. Take Guida +180
Cheick Kongo +185 vs. Frank Mir -185
Kongo may be a fierce striker. But he’s not going to knockout Frank Mir, not after the beating Mir took from Brock Lesnar. Mir also proved against Minotauro that he has greatly improved his striking. He can do enough with that to get Kongo to the ground and eventually submit him. Even if he doesn’t submit him, Kongo will not be able to defend Mir repeatedly taking him to the ground, in which case Mir will take a decision. Bad, bad matchup for Kongo. Take Mir -185
Diego Sanchez +250 vs. B.J. Penn -275
