The card and the main event may have changed, but expect nothing less than major fireworks when Josh Koscheck and Anthony Johnson enter the cage to battle. Here are my free picks for UFC 106.
Amir Sadollah (-225) vs. Phil Baroni (+200)
I smell a trap. Sadollah is all kinds of tough and crafty in the cage, as we saw when he was on “The Ultimate Fighter”. Baroni hasn’t fought in the UFC since 2005 and he is one dimensional. Still I like “The New York Bad Ass” to pull off the win by KO. Some might call it an upset, but Sadollah is all kinds of green in a UFC octagon. He got handled by Johny Hendricks in :29 at UFC 101. If Baroni gets some shots in he wins. Take Baroni.
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (-120) vs. Luiz Cane (+110)
Most of the books must be getting wagers placed on Little Nog, as his number has gone up recently. Those bettors will be sorely disappointed when Luiz Cane knocks out Nogueira. Little Nog has some serious victories on his resume: Dan Henderson, Alistair Overeem (twice), Sakuraba and Guy Mezger to name a few. But Cane represents the new breed of MMA fighters. He is fast, explosive and powerful. He has one loss in his career and that was a DQ for kicking James Irvin in the head while he was on the ground. Take Cane.
Paulo Thiago (-185) vs. Jacob Volkmann (+170)
Paulo Thiago is an underrated, under-publicized fighter. His only professional loss came at UFC 100, a decision loss to Jon Fitch. Before that he knocked out Josh Koscheck at UFC 95, his UFC debut. Thiago is well-rounded, but he is absolutely sick on the ground, a master at submissions. Volkmann is no joke. He comes in with a 9-0 record and is a submission specialist himself. In the end, I think Thiago has a bit more skill and strength and will win either by decision or sub. Take Thiago.
Josh Koscheck (-115) vs. Anthony Johnson (-115)
This should be the main event of the card. These are 2 ferocious fighters will all kinds of different skills. K0scheck has morphed from an incredible wrestler into a power puncher, and Anthony Johnson is a huge welterweight with tremendous power and speed. The mistake will be that Koscheck thinks he can trade with Johnson and win. He can’t. Johnson will knock him out. Take Johnson.
Tito Ortiz (-110) vs. Forrest Griffin (-120)
It’s been a year and a half since Ortiz has fought. It’s been over 3 years since he had a victory of any substance, and that came in a bout against Griffin at UFC 59. All the pressure is on Griffin. If Tito loses, he can chalk it up to inactivity and cage rust. If Griffin loses, it will be his 3rd loss in a row and people will no longer look at him as a viable contender at 205. So which Griffin will show up? The one that lost to Rashad and got smoked by Anderson Silva? Or the one that beat Rampage and submitted Shogun Rua? Forrest will handle the pressure and keep it standing, winning by decision or KO. Take Griffin.
