It’s another spectacular card for UFC 104, and Sports Untapped has free picks for our readers.
Anthony Johnson (-350) vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida (+250)
I find this to be a simple pick. Johnson is a big welterweight with knockout power and lightning quickness. Yoshida is a Judo practitioner that wants to get inside on Johnson. That’s not going to happen. Well it will, but when it does Yoshida will get knocked out. Take Johnson -350.
Joe Stevenson (-260) vs. Spencer Fisher (+200)
Don’t be fooled by the recent losses on Joe Stevenson’s record. Those losses were to Diego, Florian and BJ. He is an elite fighter. He manhandled Nate Diaz in his last fight. He is a big lightweight. Spencer Fisher is a talented fighter out of the Miletich camp with an impressive record of 23-4. But he has never fought anyone with the skill level of Joe Stevenson. It might be a lay and pray but there is no way “Daddy” leaves the cage in defeat. Take Stevenson -260.
Gleison Tibau (-260) vs. Josh Neer (+200)
This fight features 2 seasoned veterans of MMA, both coming off losses in their last fights. Tibau lost to Melvin Guillard and Josh Neer lost to Kurt Pellegrino. Neer has more impressive wins on his resume. He has beaten Joe Stevenson, Melvin Guillard and Din Thomas. Tibau has beaten some decent mid-level fighters, but not many of note. Still, he is the favorite. But I’m recommending that you take Neer +200.
Cain Velasquez (-300) vs. Ben Rothwell (+220)
Velasquez is undefeated but inexperienced. Rothwell is skilled and has almost 40 pro fights. This is a great matchup and a great test for both combatants. Sometimes being a beast wins out over experience. I think Velasquez learned a lot about himself and what he can do in his decision win over Cheick Kongo. I think Rothwell rolled through the IFL, but lost to Arlovski in Affliction and hasn’t fought anyone like Velasquez in along time, if ever. It’s also his first fight in the UFC. Cain will be too much for Big Ben. Take Velasquez -300.
Lyoto Machida (-412) vs. Shogun Rua (+312)
Lyoto Machida may still seem like he has that new car smell to UFC fans, but he has been around and has an impressive list of victories: Rashad, Tito, B.J. Penn, Rich Franklin and Stephan Bonnar are among the 15 fighters that have fallen at the hands of the Dragon. Shogun Rua didn’t fight at all in 2008 after being submitted by Forrest Griffin at UFC 76. His last 2 fights have been wins, but against Liddell and Coleman, 2 fighters that are way past their prime. I’m not saying Rua can’t win, but he won’t. Take Machida -412.
