It’s believed that half a billion Tweets are sent around the globe each day and the social network Twitter has put together a list of the most popular sports-related messages for the year 2014. Since soccer’s World Cup took place in Brazil between June and July it’s not going to come as a shock to learn that it was the most Tweeted about sports event of the year. According to Twitter, the month-long tournament prompted 672 million Tweets around the world.

Twitter measured the popularity of the sports events by counting how many messages were sent per minute during a competition. The top five sports-related Tweets in the world all came from the 2014 World Cup and all five of them were regarding Germany, who ended up winning the Jules Rimet Trophy 1-0 over Argentina after extra time.

The top-ranked sports Tweet came right after Germany won the title and is measured at 617,725 messages per minute. However, Twitter fails to inform us how many minutes the Tweets lasted, so we’re assuming they are referring to the 60-second period beginning with the first Tweet. Number two on the list came when Germany’s Sami Khedira scored a goal in the semifinal match against Brazil. The Germans went on to suffocate the host nation 7-1 in that match. Khedira’s goal led to 580,166 Tweets per minute.

The third-highest sports Tweet took place when Mario Gotze scored the game winner in Germany’s triumph over Argentina in the Final match. This resulted in 556,499 Tweets a minute. The fourth moment on the list resulted in 508,601 Tweets per minute and came when Toni Kroos scored his second goal in the semifinal victory against Brazil. And rounding out the top five was Kroos’ first goal of the match as it was Tweeted 497,425 times per 60 seconds.

World Cup, biggest event even on Twitter

The World Cup was also the most Tweeted about sports event overall for the year in the USA with six of the top 10 Tweets being sent during the tournament. The number one ranking belonged to the Super Bowl though, where the Seattle Seahawks destroyed the Denver Broncos 43-8 at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey.

The top sports Tweet in America came at the start of the second half just after Percy Harvin of Seattle scored a touchdown on a kickoff return. That play resulted in 381,605 Tweets a minute. Number two on the U.S. list came when Clint Dempsey scored to give the Americans a 2-1 lead over Portugal at the World Cup. This ended up with 304,603 Tweets a minute.

Number three also belonged to the Super Bowl at 271,775 Tweets when Jermaine Kearse scored a touchdown after catching a 23-yard pass for the Seahawks. Number four belongs to the Super Bowl as well and it garnered 244,889 Tweets when Malcolm Smith of the Seahawks scored a touchdown on an interception. The fifth-most Tweeted sports play came when Jermaine Jones scored for the U.S. in the World Cup game against Portugal. This was good for 234, 956 Tweets a minute. Number five to nine on the list came during the World Cup, while number 10 came during the NFC Championship football game
