If West Virginia is going to get past Duke to advance to the NCAA Championship game, they will apparently be doing so without the services of starting point guard, Darryl “Truck” Bryant. Bryant is nursing a broken right foot, something he did during a practice session before the Mountaineers’ Sweet 16 game against Washington.
While it doesn’t look like Bryant will be playing Saturday, never say never. Before the Kentucky game, Bryant was fitted with a special shoe, and declared himself ready to play; although, his self-diagnosis fell on deaf ears when Bob Huggins went with Joe Mazzulla, who had a career game against the Wildcats, while powering his team to the Final Four.
Mazzulla scored 17 points against Kentucky, also hitting his first 3-point basket of the season. Seeing how Mazzulla clearly outplayed Kentucky freshman, John Wall, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Huggins kept Bryant out of the Duke game.
Whether or not Bryant plays is not, to me, the most important aspect of the Duke/WVU game. If Duke struggles against the Mountaineers’ 1-3-1 zone, it won’t matter who the starting point guard is. West Virginia’s athleticism and length make them a monster on the defensive end; however, Duke shoots a decent percentage from behind the 3-point arc, which gives them a better chance, statistically, than Kentucky had.
