Tony Romo Quits US Open Qualifier

On Monday, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo used a weather postponement as an excuse to quit a 36-hole US Open sectional qualifier after 21 holes.  Golfers were supposed to resume their weather-shortened second rounds on Tuesday, but Romo used his obligation to participate in a voluntary Cowboys practice that day as a convenient excuse to run away after starting his second round with a quadruple bogey.

Despite chickening out and giving up, Romo said he learned valuable lessons about competition before bolting with his tail between his legs that he could take back to the Cowboys:

But it’s still a lesson to take certain things and use them mentally. The ability to overcome adversity is a great lesson. I really didn’t get emotionally down after I made a big number early. … On the football field, we’re going and all of a sudden, we have two drives that stall. Everyone is saying, ‘What’s going on? Why haven’t we done anything?’ We’ll talk about it, we’ll learn from it, we’ll go out and execute on the next one. No matter what happened in the past, it’s about the next play and about going forward and I think that’s what I tried to do today, and I was very proud of fighting back.

Pretty inspiring words from a coward.

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford recently clowned on Romo for spending so much time on his lackluster golf game.
