The Detroit Tigers have signed free agent pitcher Brad Penny to a one-year, $3 million deal, with incentives worth another $3 million. The 32-year-old righthander started only nine games last season for the Cardinals because of injuries, going 3-4 with a 3.23 ERA. Penny has a career record of 108-88 with a 4.11 ERA in 11 big league seasons.
Penny helped the Florida Marlins win a World Series in 2003, then had a career year with the Dodgers in 2007, going 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA and finishing third in the NL Cy Young voting.
Besides injuries, the big red flag for Penny is that he only made one short stay in the American League and was pretty awful. Penny went 7-8 with a 5.61 ERA in 24 starts with the Red Sox in 2009 before getting released with just over a month left in the season.
Penny made $7.5 million last year for those nine starts with the Cardinals. The $3 million he’s getting from Detroit will be his annual lowest salary since 2003, so there’ll be a lot of coupon clipping in the Penny household.
