After the Detroit Tigers held on to win Sunday’s Game 2 at Yankee Stadium to even their best-of-five American League Divisional Series with the New York Yankees at a game apiece, Tigers closer Jose Valverde said the series was over. Once he said he was only joking that the Tigers would win two straight in Detroit to end things, but he kept on saying it.

Valverde, who allowed two ninth-inning garbage runs in Detroit’s 5-3 win, started with: “It’s over already. [Tigers ace Justin] Verlander tomorrow. Then the next day. That’s it. Have the celebration in Detroit. I’m joking, guys.” The closer then made similar statements in Spanish to ESPN Deportes, but without adding the joking part: “I think the series will finish in our house. They have a good team but the series is not [going] back to New York.”

But Valverde wasn’t finished yet. He also said, “It’s over for the Yankees. No more. One hundred percent. I want it over, because I want my team in the second round.” Phil Coke, a former Yankees reliever now with the Tigers, asked Valverde, “You know they’re going to write that, right?” Valverde chuckled and responded, “I don’t care.”

The Tigers are -130 favorites to win Game 3 on Monday night, which features Verlander against Yankees ace CC Sabathia — the marquee pitching matchup that was spoiled by rain on Friday night.
