Tiger Woods announced on September 7th that he plans on returning to competitive golf in October at the Safeway Open in Napa. The event, which runs from Oct. 13th to the 16th, is the season opener to the 2016/17 PGA Tour. If he’s able to play, it will be the first competitive round of golf for Woods in the past 14 months. The world’s former number one golfer has been out of action for more than a year due to back surgery, but claims he’s almost finished with rehab and is almost ready to play. However, he still admits there’s a chance his plans may fall through.
Along with hoping to play in the Safeway Open, Woods said he plans on competing in the Turkish Airlines Open in Antalya, Turkey from November 3rd to 6th and the Hero World Challenge from December 1st to the 4th in the Bahamas Dec. 1-4. The famous golfer said it was disappointing to miss so many important tournaments over the past year me, but he made sure he didn’t rush his recovery time. The last time Woods played competitively was in August of 2015 when he took part in the Wyndham Championship. He finished the event in a tie for 10th place after being a co-leader following the first 36 holes.
The 40-year-old Woods underwent a procedure in April of 2014 to fix a pinched nerve in his neck and returned to action three months later after missing a pair of majors. He then underwent surgery in September of 2015 and hoped the recovery time would be just as quick, but a second procedure was needed last October and he’s been out ever since. Woods was chipping and putting by March as he continued to rehabilitate and work on his flexibility and strength. However, he missed the Masters this year and has now missed two of the last three events at Augusta National.
Woods ended up missing all four majors this year for the first time in his 20-year career. He comes back with 14 major titles to his name, which is four short of Jack Nicklaus, who holds the record with 18 victories. Woods hasn’t won a major since 2008 though when he captured that year’s U.S. Open during a playoff round. He played in just eight tournaments in 2014 and then 11 last year and is currently ranked number 711 in the world. His first return to the golf course will come in late September at the Ryder Cup, but he won’t be playing. Woods will be a vice-captain on the American team in a non-playing role.
