Tiger Woods Dumps Caddie, So Caddie Gets Catty

Tiger Woods isn’t sure when he’ll be back from leg injuries that have kept him from competition since mid-May, but he is sure that he’ll back with a different caddie. On Wednesday, Tiger announced on his website that he had ended his long-term relationship with Steve Williams, who carried his clubs for the past 13 years and for 13 of Tiger’s 14 major championship victories.

The surprised and jilted Williams wasted little time taking some shots at his former boss. “Given the fact of my loyalty and the way that I stood by this guy through thick and thin … the timing of it is very poor, from my perspective,” Williams told a CNN affiliate in his native New Zealand. Then Williams added he had lost respect for Tiger after the sex scandal broke in late 2009: “Well I think when you’re great friends with somebody and a situation like [Tiger’s sex scandal] occurs, you obviously lose some kind of respect.”

Williams was only slightly more diplomatic in a statement on his own website kiwicaddy.co.nz:

I am no longer caddying for Tiger after he informed me that he needed to make a change. After 13 years of loyal service needless to say this came as a shock. Given the circumstances of the past 18 months working through Tiger’s scandal, a new coach and with it a major swing change and Tiger battling through injuries I am very disappointed to end our very successful partnership at this time. I have had the opportunity to work of late for Australian Adam Scott and will now caddy for him on a permanent basis. Having started my caddying career with Australian great Peter Thompson and working for Greg Norman in the 80’s I am excited about the future working for another Australian.

It seems odd that Williams calls himself a Kiwi but is excited to go back to working for an Australian. There’s also already speculation that Tiger was jealous that Williams started caddying for Scott at the US Open while Tiger was resting his injured leg. Williams could also end up helping the International Team at this year’s President’s Cup if Tiger comes back and make the US Team.
