Tiger Woods won his singles match on Sunday 4 & 3 over Australian Aaron Baddeley, giving the US Team the deciding point in the 2011 Presidents Cup. Tiger made six birdies on Sunday, the most of any of the 24 golfers in the 12 singles matches, but wasn’t facing too much pressure as the Americans entered the final day with a commanding four-point lead and eventually won 19-15.
After the win, Tiger thanked US captain Fred Couples, who made the somewhat controversial choice to put Tiger on the team, a move that International Team captain Greg Norman said he wouldn’t have made. “I’m thankful that [Couples] picked me,” said Tiger, who went just 1-3 in foursomes and fourball matches. “Greg is probably not happy about it after I closed out the cup today. But it’s great to be a part of this team.” It was probably also great just to win anything, since Tiger hasn’t won anywhere in over two years.
Norman not only gave Tiger props after the American victory, the Australian legend says he’s rooting for Tiger to get back to where he was. “I hope he comes back, there’s no question about it,” said Norman. “He stepped up to the plate, he putted extremely well and we all knew that, Tiger head-to-head is Tiger … When you get up against a player like that with a history of wanting to win and beat you, it’s a tough match.”
Tiger also credited teammate Steve Stricker for giving him some putting advice before Sunday’s singles matches. “This week I played even better [than he did finished third last week at the Australian Open] and a lot of putts they just didn’t go in. But today was a different deal, Stricks gave me a little lesson on the putting green and whatever he says about putting I’m going to do.”
