On Monday, Joseph Bramlett, a black Stanford alum with mixed race parents, earned his PGA TOUR card. Bramlett did it by advancing through the final stage of Q School, something no other African-American had done for 25 years. The world’s number two golfer marked the occasion by logging on to the internet and sending out two congratulatory tweets.
“Congrats to Joe Bramlett for making it through Q School,” Tiger Woods (@tigerwoods) wrote in his first tweet. Then he got more personal with tweet No. 2: “Amazing feat considering he sat out a whole year with wrist injury. Can’t wait to play with him next season.”
Bramlett was pretty psyched when a reporter showed him Tiger’s tweets. “So he was watching?” said Bramlett. “That’s kind of a cool shout-out.”
Bramlett had no problem talking about what his accomplishment meant for minority golfers. “It’s been too long,” he said. “To finally end that 25-year drought means the world to me, my family and everyone who has helped me along the way. It’s an honor, it truly is an honor. Like I’ve said before, it’s been a long time. I’m just thrilled to see it start to change.”
Bramlett is no stranger to firsts. When he qualified for his first U.S. Amateur at age fourteen, he was the youngest golfer ever to do so. He was also successful at Stanford where he was part of the 2007 men’s team that won the NCAA title. Then he missed nearly two years with two wrist injuries.
