Tiger Woods won’t be playing in the US Open next week, according to an announcement Tuesday on his website and Twitter. Tiger hasn’t missed a US Open since 1994, just after he graduated high school, and even played the 2008 Open despite a ruptured ACL and a double stress fracture of the left tibia, but this time doctors told him to skip the year’s second major.

Tiger’s short and (bitter-)sweet Twitter announcement: “Not playing in US Open. Very disappointed. Short-term frustration for long-term gain.

Tiger’s longer announcement on his website:

I am extremely disappointed that I won’t be playing in the U.S. Open, but it’s time for me to listen to my doctors and focus on the future. I was hopeful that I could play, but if I did, I risk further damage to my left leg. My knee and Achilles tendon are not fully healed. I hope to be ready for AT&T National, the next two majors and the rest of the year. It’s been a frustrating and difficult year, but I’m committed to my long-term health. I want to thank the fans for their encouragement and support. I am truly grateful and will be back playing when I can.

The AT&T National starts June 30 and benefits Tiger’s foundation.  Michael Whitehead, a 23-year-old amateur from Texas, will take Tiger’s spot in the US Open field.
