In his first public comments since Rory McIlroy’s dominant eight-shot win at the US Open, Tiger Woods praised the 22-year-old’s performance as “cool to watch.” Tiger wasn’t ready to rule himself out or in of the next major, The British Open, which is just a few short weeks away, pledging to learn from his mistakes and not come back until he’s 100% healthy.
Tiger on Rory at the US Open: “That was very impressive playing. To do that at a US Open, to be that aggressive the entire time, that was cool to watch.”
Still, Tiger hardly sounded ready to pass the torch based on one tournament. “I’m 35, I’m not 65 – I’ve still got some years ahead of me and I feel my best years are still ahead of me,” said Tiger, showing flashes of the his old confidence.
However, Tiger refused to set a timetable for his return, saying he rushed back from his injury at The Masters only to aggravate the injury in his first tournament back at The Players Championship. “I’m being smarter this time,” Tiger says. “I’m setting no timetable which is very different for me. Usually, I set a timetable when I want to come back and play. I’ve had injuries before. This one’s different. I’m just going to learn my lesson from what I did at the Players and apply it this time and come back when I’m 100%.”
