Last Thursday, Colin Montgomerie issued a statement apologizing for cheating on his wife of two years, and a day later he stressed his infidelity wouldn’t affect his performance as Europe’s Ryder Cup captain. Montgomerie wed widow and millionairess Gaynor Knowles (no relation to Beyonce) in April 2008, and began an affair with an ex-girlfriend just months later.

Montgomerie only broke it off when ex-girlfriend turned mistress Joanne Baldwin threatened to reveal the affair unless he left Knowles.

To my eyes Baldwin looks a lot like one of the Real Housewives of New York and is significantly less attractive than Monty’s current wife.  Baldwin originally hooked up with Monty while she was still married and right after he announced breaking with his first wife Elmear Wilson after 14 years.  While dating Baldwin, Monty had a fling with golfer/supermodel Inse Sastre but then went back to Baldwin (which again is hard to fathom visually).

One of Monty’s friends tried to explain it to the Daily Mail: “Colin thrives on adrenaline and excitement, in his sporting life as in other parts of his life.”

Thursday’s Monty statement:

I have put my marriage under considerable strain but we are working through these problems. I am very sorry for the hurt I have caused to the ones I love so much. I would ask that my family and I are given the space and privacy to continue trying to resolve the issues.

Friday’s Monty guarantee:

No way will it affect the Ryder Cup captaincy. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone here at Celtic Manor in October. It’s not going to impact the captaincy, not at all. It’s up to Gaynor and I to work things out and that is continuing.

Monty’s first wife divorced him in 2004 on the grounds of unreasonable behavior – his obsession with golf.
