Tiger Woods announced on his website Monday evening that he’s hopeful he’ll be able to play in the US Open, which starts on June 16th at Congressional Country Club outside Washington, DC. Tiger hurt himself in the final round of The Masters last month, then said he was still hurting when he withdrew after just nine holes at The Players Champioinship last week.
“Aggravating my injury is very disappointing,” Tiger roboticlally told his own website. “I’ll do whatever is necessary to play in the U.S. Open, and I’m hopeful I can be there to compete.”
Tiger’s site says he reinjured his knee on his first tee shot at The Players, which led to him also aggravating his calf and achilles tendon. Playing before the US Open “will be a week-to-week decision,” but playing his usual tuneup at The Memorial is called “doubtful.” Tiger hasn’t won a major since the 2008 US Open.
In other golf news, France was awarded the 2018 Ryder Cup, beating out bids from Spain, Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands. It will be only the second time the competition will be played on the European mainland. “The venue for the 2018 Ryder Cup, Le Golf National, is a truly outstanding golf course, providing excellent spectator viewing and the promise of spectacular climaxes to the matches,” said European Ryder Cup director Richard Hills.
