“To shoot something under par” — that’s all the world’s number one golfer said he hoped to do on the first day of the PGA Championship.  It certainly doesn’t sound like much, but Tiger Woods hadn’t shot something under par since the opening round of The British Open nearly a month ago.  On Thursday, Tiger stood on the 18th hole needing to make an 8-foot birdie putt to get under par.

The putt went in and Tiger headed to the clubhouse at -1, having successfully taken a successful baby step.  With fog delays earlier in the day, many golfers didn’t finish their first round before play was suspended for darkness on Thursday night.  Tiger was left tied for 24th, behind a dozen golfers who completed better rounds on Thursday. Bubba Watson and Francesco Molinari shared the lead at -4.

After his round, Tiger sounded pretty relieved to make that putt to get under par.  “I’ve played too good not to shoot under par,” said Tiger. “It would’ve been very disappointing and frustrating to end up at even par as well as I played today.

Of course, Tiger was also under par in his first round at the British Open, but couldn’t get back under in any of his final three rounds.  The last tournament Tiger had two sub-par rounds in was The Memorial over two months ago.  Tiger’s probably caught a break getting to complete his round on Thursday, while many others — including world #2 Phil Mickelson — while have to finish their rounds on Friday.

But it may not be a good sign that Tiger feels he felt pretty well, and still barely got under par.  He’s not going to win the tournament if he’s at -4 on Sunday. It’ll certainly be interesting to see if Tiger can build on this tiny bit of momentum or goes back to struggling.
