The “Sewer” Scenario

The more I delve into the rules and regs of an uncapped 2010 NFL season, the more I become intrigued. Which teams are handcuffed? Which are free to do as they please? It’s a lot to digest, but if you dig decimal points and dollar signs, this article on NFL.com is worth checking out.

One blurb that especially piqued my interest involved teams dumping underachieving players with fat contracts. With no salary cap, a team can cut a guy who isn’t living up to expectations without penalty. In other words, no cap hit, because there is no cap, unless the money is guaranteed. I like how one agent described this scenario:

One agent referred to this as a “sewer” scenario, because any bad contracts could be discarded. Once a labor agreement is reached in the future, a lot of teams can have clean books and move forward with better financial structure.

So, get ready for a a bunch of overpaid bozos hitting the bricks. Several disappointing high draft picks and free agents that didn’t work out will likely be shown the door. It would be a kind of do-over for teams that were snakebit by a string of past mistakes.

In turn, a glut of castoffs would deepen what looks to be a very shallow free agent pool, at least in terms of numbers, if not talent. There’s always a certain amount of aging vets who are kicked to the curb every offseason, but an increase of younger players joining them on the unemployment line is a distinct possibility.

All those guys who’ve been stealing cash might want to brace themselves. Things could get very bloody in the coming weeks and months.
