The Cleveland Browns have been one of the dumber NFL franchises over the last several years. Poor hiring practices, bad draft picks and overpaying for washed-up free agents are just a few of their recent blunders. The point of bringing Mike Holmgen aboard was to put an end to the days of shoddy management and ill-conceived offseason strategies.
If you want to compete in pro football it takes talent. A lot of talent. Josh Cribbs is one such talent, and it appears that the Browns brain trust recognizes this and is prepared to do something about it. That would be a restructuring of Cribbs’ current deal in order to better compensate the Pro Bowl kick returner/specialist.
If they can pull it off before someone tosses a wrench in the machine, Cleveland could take a meaningful first step in rebuilding their once-proud organization. Wait, have they ever really been proud? I mean the real Browns are in Baltimore, right? These impostor Browns have been floundering in failure since they returned in 1999.
Whatever the case, Cribbs remaining in orange and white is a good thing for the team and fans. The dude is a human highlight reel (sorry Dominique Wilkins). If he does stick around, I think it would behoove Eric Mangini to find more ways to get #16 the ball. Wildcat, tailback, wide receiver, whatever it takes. Just get the pigskin in his hands and let him work his magic. Anything is an improvement over watching Brady Quinn short-hop a ten yard slant into the dirt.

I hate to be the bearer of good news but the Browns’ haven’t been “floundering in failure since they returned in 1999.” Yes, they have had only two winning seasons but one of of those winning seasons translated into a playoff spot back in 2002 which was only their fourth year after the Return.
