After losing quarterbacks Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart to season-ending injuries in their last two games, the Houston Texans signed 36-year-old veteran quarterback Jake Delhomme. Texans coach Gary Kubiak said rookie T.J. Yates will start on Sunday against the Falcons, but the coach was excited to have Delhomme join his quarterback corps, which also includes career backup Kellen Clemens.
The Texans also worked out veteran Jeff Garcia, but ultimately went with Delhomme, who spent last year as a backup in Cleveland after a successful run in Carolina where he led the Panthers to Super Bowl XXXVIII in his first season as the starter.
Kubiak on choosing Delhomme:
I thought both of them worked out well. Some coaches I talked to spoke real highly of Jake. They think he’ll fit in perfectly with what we were looking for. I think he’s a good fit with T.J. … [Delhomme]’s a leader and a good person. He’s played in big games. He’s got West Coast verbiage in his background. He was so upbeat about coming here. He showed good arm strength. I was impressed. He’s just a very impressive guy.
Supposedly the Miami Dolphins also sniffed around Delhomme earlier this year, but he didn’t want to leave semi-retirement for a crap team. The Texans are two games up in the AFC South with five to play, so were naturally more attractive. “Jake is fired up and ready to go and will do everything he can to support T.J.,” says his agent.
