Yesterday had a few pretty big surprises, although it might not be so surprising to see Roddick out early considering he is still recovering from mono. You have to give it to Tipsarevic though, he played an almost flawless match painting the lines and going for broke as often as he could.
Another quite surprising result was that teenager Ryan Harrison managedto beat Ivan Ljubicic in four sets. Really impressive and this bodes well for the future of American tennis.
American tennis is already in decent form despite Roddick’s loss, becuase both Querrey and Isner managed to get through their matches quite convincingly. These players are both dangerous enough to reach a semi-final here I think.
If we are heading back to surprises I early raised a flag for Berdych’s match against serve-volley Frenchman Llodra. It is always difficult for players who play unorthodox styles and Berdych found out yesterday. “I had no chance to play my tennis, and it’s well done for him,” Berdych said after his straight sets loss.
Now let’s look at today’s most exciting matches.
Davydenko vs Gasquet. The most exciting match-up of today. These guys have one match each against each other, but that was in 2005. Davydenko looked very sharp in his opening round and is the stronger player mentally of the two, although you could argue that Gasquet has more talent. But talent is nothing if you don’t have the mental game to back it up, so Davydenko in four sets is my pick. Tennis betting lovers should check out Sportsinteraction for the best tennis betting odds. You get 1.33 on Davydenko and 3.00 on Gasquet.
Soderling vs Dent. Soderling had big problems with his game in his match against Haider-Maurer, finally finding a way to win after 5 sets. Dent had an easier first round match but I don’t think he will have a nice time against Soderling. The fast courts will help him compared to the French Open when Soderling won 6-0 6-1 6-1, but I don’t see how Dent can win this one. Soderling in three. If you think Soderling is off form and Dent is on a roll you should bet on Sportsinteraction at 4.75 times the money.
Petzschner vs Djokovic. How tired is Novak Djokovic? He has problems with his breathing and after the five set match against Troicki he should be feeling something. This should be a good chance for Petzschner to attack Djokovic and force him to hit passing shots over and over again. We will see if Petzschner employs the chip and charge tactic, but I think that is his best chance. If he stays back on the baseline he will probably only get one set, not more. If you believe in Petzschner you get five times your money at Sportsinteraction.
