The Orioles are reporting that over 12,000 O’s fans attended the team’s fanfest Saturday at the Baltimore Convention Center. Former Secretary of State James Baker, now of Oriole Post, was there and reports some shocking news:
Right in the middle of the day it was leaked that the Orioles signed Miguel Tejada to a one-year deal. And the news rippled through the crowd. Honestly I saw nothing but faces light up at the sound of the news. All of the sudden fans seemed genuinely excited at the prospect of Tejada coming back.
Wow — 12,000 people and not one of them came up with the correct reaction to the Orioles giving Tejada SIX MILLION AMERICAN DOLLARS for one year?
(The correct reaction being, of course, “What, Rafael Palmeiro’s asking price was too high?”)
After twelve consecutive losing seasons, it’s pretty amazing that the Orioles can find 12,000 people to come to any kind of team function — especially in January. (Not that there’s much to do in Baltimore ever.) One would have to wonder about the sanity and baseball judgment of those 12,000 people. It’s hard not to feel sorry that the fans and the team have sunk so low that Tejada’s return is the highlight of their year.
If anyone could make sense of this it would be Baltimore’s Patrick Smith of Bugs&Cranks. Surprisingly, Smitty doesn’t hate the Tejada signing:
It’s two years later and much has been, if not forgotten, then at least nudged aside. The stench of the Mitchell Report, while not dissipated, is more bearable. And it’s not like Tejada’s career is over. His power numbers are down – insert juice suspicion here – but he led the National League in doubles last year. He hit .313 and drove in 86 runs. He has become the Human Double Play, leading the NL in that sad category both of his Astro years. But really, you could do worse than Miguel Tejada for a year.
Last time he was here, Tejada got mad when anyone suggested he learn to play third base. But a an admission that you’re two years older that you told anyone you were, a steroid scandal, a federal charge of lying to Congress and a pile of so-so free agents still looking for jobs can do wonders for your outlook.
Twelve years of losing can do weird things for your outlook.

You’re a jackass…Go Orioles.
have you ever been to Baltimore? There’s plenty to do there.
Do you have a better idea than Tejada for the O’s?
he may have been a human double play last year, but he was also a human double. He led the NL in doubles, in fact. Not exactly a throwaway.
Way to be a douche-bag. The Orioles have a very large group of hardcore fans. We understand that we’ve had 12 losing seasons but the O’s have made some very strong plays the last couple years that could make us players in the future. Keep in mind we play in the same divisions as the Red Sox and the Yankee’s two teams with seamlessly bottomless pockets.
You’re a douche, and you’ve clearly never been to Baltimore. And if you have, you never left the Holiday Inn Express you stayed at out on the Beltway.
Also, we all know the Orioles suck, but we stick by them because we are loyal to the players…. and because we’re all waiting for that glorious day that Peter Angelos finally sells the team to someone who actually knows how to run it.
That being said, this Tejada deal is an example of Aneglos-driven wastefulness that has riddled this team for decades ($6 mil for a player at the end of his career instead of $6 mil for 3-5 promising up-and-comers.)
Wow.
I’m all for a discussion about the merits of Tejada being in a Baltimore uniform (there are plenty who like the move, those who don’t); however, insulting fans and the city is a whole other mater.
Trust me, the Orioles could have done worse than Tejada.
Like some previous posters have noted, you’ve probably never been to the Baltimore-Washington region.
People still care about the Orioles, and much like fans of the other 29 teams in baseball — they want a winner.
Fans may not want to go to Camden Yards for a myriad of reasons, but your attempt at humor just for the sake of it and dissing a region is a bit childish.
Don’t try to be a comedian and just get to the point.
