Tim Tebow sure seems like the most popular third-string quarterback in the NFL, with disgruntled Denver Broncos fans chanting his name in the third quarter of Monday’s season-opening loss to the Oakland Raiders, and some even planning to spend $10,000 on billboards saying starter Kyle Orton must go. Tebow said the support is nice, but is willing to wait for his turn to come.
“Well, I guess I appreciate the support, you know, but we got people in charge here that we trust and trust they’re going to do the right thing,” said a diplomatic Tebow, who also added that giving the $10,000 to charity instead would be “a good idea.” Tebow is at least talking patient. “When I get those opportunities, I want to make the most of them. But when I don’t get those opportunities, I’ve got to be the best leader and the best supporter and the best teammate that I can be.”
Well spoken for a second-year, third-string quarterback, right? Of course, the eight guys who came up with the idea of the billboards, really want Orton out more than they want the former Heisman Trophy winner from Florida in. “We’re not Tebow fanatics, we think Tebow gives us the best chance to win,” said Jesse Oaks, the Kentucky-based ringleader of the billboarders. “But if Brady Quinn or even [practice squad QB] Adam Weber can give us a chance, that’s what we want.”
“Well, I’ve seen a lot of billboards and I can’t remember one that really influenced me,” said Broncos head coach John Fox, before adding some obligatory comments about what great fans the team has.
