Team Lidstrom overcame a 4-0 deficit and a raucous Raleigh crowd rooting for Team Staal and its three Carolina Hurricanes, to win a typically high-scoring NHL All-Star Game, 11-10. Despite playing on the losing side, Patrick Sharp of the Chicago Blackhawks was named the game’s MVP for his goal and two assists in the game.
Capitals superstar Alexander Ovechkin started the scoring just 50 seconds into the game, beating Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. Team Staal continued to victimize Fleury over the game’s first 5:41, scoring four goals on just eight shots. Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings got Team Lidstrom on the board at the 10:50 mark, beating Cam Ward of the hometown Hurricanes. Five minutes and 40 seconds later, Team Lidstrom had tied the game at four.
Team Staal retook the lead in the second period, but Danny Briere of the Philadelphia Flyers gave Team Lidstrom its first lead at 7-6 with 4:21 left in the second. Team Lidstrom fell behind again in the third, then took the lead for good on three consecutive goals in less than four minutes by Briere, Jonathan Toews of the Blackhawks, and Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Anaheim Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller stopped 15 of 17 shots for Team Lidstrom, and was the only netminder to allow fewer than three goals. Despite the offensive onslaught, Steven Stamkos of the Lightning still found something nice to say about the goaltenders. “From our standpoint, you realize how much better they are because they’re still making unbelievable saves against 2-on-0s, 3-on-1s, 2-on-1s,” said Stamkos. “They’re unbelievable athletes.”
