Ernie Banks never said “Let’s play one and four-ninths.” Last night’s Yankees-Twins tilt at Tarzhay Field was suspended due to steady rain after five innings. So they’ll pick up a scoreless tie in the 6th this afternoon, then play the regularly scheduled game after. Fans who got rained out don’t get to see the end of the game, but fans who had tickets for tonight’s game get at least three and a half extra innings free.
I can’t be the only one who thinks this is dumb.
Baseball is not cricket. One game should not be played over two days. They should just start over from the first inning. Of course this wouldn’t be an issue in Minnesota if they hadn’t built a totally backwards-looking roofless stadium. The closure of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome last year means that the only place in all of Major League Baseball that you’re guaranteed to see the sport’s finest stars playing baseball unaffected by the elements is historic Tropicana Field. You wouldn’t want to see Kobe Bryant trying to shoot jumpers in a steady drizzle, so why would you want to watch Evan Longoria try to hit 95 mph fastballs in anything other than a perfectly maintained arena-like atmosphere?
God hates suspended games. God hates outdoor baseball. So should you. You want proof? How about the squirrel that tried to maul former Devil Ray legend Brendan Harris before the game was suspended? That proof enough for you?
