Manchester United can’t keep affording to drop points on the road if they hope to catch Chelsea this season and re-claim the English Premier league crown. They’ll be hoping to rectify this problem with an away game against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Oct. 2nd. Second-place United sits three points behind leaders Chelsea and are the only unbeaten team in the EPL, but haven’t won on the road yet, drawing all three games.

They blew points in two of those games by giving up late equalizers against Fulham and Bolton, but came back twice last weekend to draw 2-2 at Bolton. Sunderland manager and former United player Steve Bruce hasn’t managed to beat Sir Alex Ferguson yet, losing 12 and drawing three times.

This could be the time to finally get a win as Sunderland is strong at home and United has been letting in quite a few league goals, conceding seven in their last three league matches. However, they won a Champions league game 1-0 in Valencia on Wednesday.

They can still score goals, but striker Wayne Rooney will miss the game due to an ankle injury. However, Dmitar Berbatov has six league goals and Michael Owen has scored three times in his last 110 minutes of football. Javier Hernandez scored the winner against Valencia and Federico Macheda are also striking options. Midfielders Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, and Owen Hargreaves will likely miss the match too.

United is unbeaten in their past 15 league games, going back to April when they lost at home to Chelsea. The last time they lost on the road was against Everton in February. Since then, they’ve won four and drawn four.

Sunderland will be without former United defender/midfielder Kieran Richardson and might also be missing David Meyler, Fraizer Campbell, Anton Ferdinand, John Mensah, and Michael Turner. Striker Danny Welbeck is on loan from United and won’t be eligible.

United and Sunderland drew 2-2 at old Trafford last season and United beat them 1-0 away. United has now won its last four games in Sunderland.

Sunderland vs Manchester United Betting Odds and Predictions

Sunderland has some decent scoring power up front in striker Darren Bent and newcomer Asamoah Gyan from Ghana. If Bruce has the sense to play them together they could cause some problems for weak defenders such as Rio Ferdinand. This one could very well end in another 2-2 draw.

Sportsbook William Hill has the odds of a Manchester United win posted at 4/5 while a Sunderland victory is 4/1 and the odds of a draw are 9/4. The odds of a 2-2 draw are 16/1.
