No team in college football has had more bad luck, misfortune or a rougher season this year than the once dominated Oklahoma Sooners. Every single season under head coach Bob Stoops the Sooners are thought to have a very promising season with a good possibility of a BCS championship, but this season has just been a nightmare for Bob Stoops and company as they have had problems staying healthy all year long.
The first serious blow to the Sooners season was when Heisman quarterback Sam Bradford went down with a shoulder injury in the first game of the season. It was uncertain how severe the injury to Bradford’s shoulder on his throwing arm was, but it was bad enough at the time to keep him on the sidelines for the rest of the game against BYU in which they lost 14-13.
After the game it was announced that Bradford would miss some time, but would be back in the lineup soon. The injury was a bit more serious than the Sooners thought or admitted as Bradford sat out the next three games before taking the field again against Baylor.
The Sooners and Sam Bradford seemed to be back to form against Baylor as the former Heisman trophy winner led Oklahoma to blowout victory 33-7. Bradford finished the game with 389 yards and one touchdown as all seemed well for the Sooners once again.
Unfortunately, the Sooners success was short lived after losing the Red River Rivalry game against the Texas Longhorns 16-13. Not only did they lose perhaps the biggest game of the season, but they also lost Sam Bradford for the season after he re-injured his shoulder and would no longer take another snap as the Oklahoma Sooners quarterback as he has elected to enter the NFL draft.
Two losses for a team like the Sooners basically means no BCS championship, three losses means they might get lucky with a decent bowl game, but four losses is a disaster and pretty much ends their season. That is exactly what happen after Bradford went down, but now the Sooners have even more problems as they have also lost three other players for the season as well in offensive lineman Jarvis Jones, defensive end Auston English and team captain Brody Eldridge.
So it is time for Stoops and company to start thinking about the future with this season being a lost cause. College football teams don’t stay down for long and I fully expect the Sooners to be a championship contender once again next season, but in the meantime they will be licking their wounds as they try to finish out the season.
