The Washington Nationals rookie starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg took his first major league loss on Wednesday evening. The young phenom pitched six innings, allowing nine hits and just one run in the 1-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals. Strasburg is now 2-1 on the season.
Jose Guillen belted a RBI single to right scoring David DeJesus in the fifth inning to prove to be the game winner. Guillen finished the game with two hits, along with DeJesus and Getz for Kansas City. Washington was able to muster just six hits in the game, two from Adam Dunn, and one from Strasburg, for his first major league hit.
The crowd of 31,913 saw the Royals upend Strasburg and the Nationals. Brian Bannister went six innings, and allowed just five hits and two walks, while striking out five. He received the win, which moved his record to 7-5. Robinson Tejeda and Joakim Soria threw the final three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five to deal the deal.
The win for the Royals moved them to 30-43 on the season, and 16-24 when playing on the road. Kansas City is in fourth place in the American League Central, 11.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins. Washington is now 33-40, and 20-16 at home. The Nationals continue to sit in last; 9.5 games behind the National League East leading Atlanta Braves.
Both teams will take Thursday off; then Washington will play their American League rival – Baltimore Orioles for a three game series over the weekend. The Royals will welcome their state rival – St. Louis Cardinals to town for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
