In a game Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin compared to “a horror flick,” Pittsburgh came within a few yards of blowing a 20-point fourth quarter lead in Cincinnati. Trailing by six, the Bengals had 4th & 5 on the Pittsburgh 12 with under 40 seconds to play before the Steelers defense finally made a stand to preserve a 27-21 win. The Bengals still covered as 6.5-point underdogs.

The game came down to one play — Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer appeared to complete a pass to Jordan Shipley to set up 1st & Goal, but Steelers defenders James Harrison and Ike Taylor combined to knock the ball lose. Ruled an incompletion, the Steelers just had to take a knee twice to escape with the win.

The Steelers improved to 6-2, joining the Ravens in first place in the AFC North, but they was some disappointment about the nearly disastrous fourth quarter collapse. “It’s disappointing that we let them back into the game, but it’s very encouraging that we were able to hold them,” said Steelers strong safety Troy Polamalu. “Last year, we were in the same situation and didn’t pull it out.”

The Bengals seem dead in the water after their fifth straight loss dropped them to 2-6 and last place in the AFC North, but Terrell Owens, who had two touchdown passes, was still finding positives:

I still feel at 2-6 this is the best 2-6 team I’ve been on. Obviously that’s a negative and a positive, but we have the guys to do it. For whatever reason, we’re just not doing it. Somehow, some way we need to pay attention to detail. I think every guy has to look in the mirror. What can we do? What can they do to get better here going forward? You never know. Anything can happen in this league. Statistically, I don’t know where we are, if we can make the playoffs, but we have to start somewhere. Tonight would have been a great way to start and put us on a streak.

The two scores made Owens the third player in NFL history with at least 150 career touchdown catches, joining Randy Moss and Jerry Rice. The Steelers are now 6-0 on Monday Night Football under Tomlin, and have put up a 6-2 first half record for the fourth consecutive year.
