The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley to a six-year, $61.5 million deal, the second biggest contract in franchise history behind only notorious quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (eight years, $102 million). The Steelers had used their franchise tag on Woodley over the offseason, and the deal also helps them get under this year’s salary cap.
Woodley is very pleased with the deal, at least if Twitter is any indication: “Wanted u 2 hear it here 1st- drafted here… super bowl here.. will retire here!! time 2 get u #7!! @STEELERS 4 LIFE!!” He’s not threatening No. 7 Roethlisberger in that tweet — he means a seventh Super Bowl title for the Steelers.
Just 26, Woodley has 39 career sacks, including 35 since 2008. He had 10 last season, giving him three straight seasons with double-digit sack totals, something only he and teammate James Harrison have accomplished in franchise history.
Woodley is guaranteed $27 million over the first two seasons. Woodley gets slightly more money overall than the Kansas City Chiefs gave their franchise linebacker Tamba Hall on Thursday ($61.5M to $60M), but Hall gets more guaranteed money ($35M). The Chiefs though had much more room under the salary cap, while the Steelers had to get Roethlisberger and Harrison to rework their deals to get under the cap.
