Veteran forward Jaromir Jagr and the Dallas Stars agreed to a one-year deal worth $4.5 million on Tuesday. The 40-year-old Jagr put up career lows last season with 19 goals and 54 points in his first and only season with the Philadelphia Flyers, but that wasstill mildly impressive after he had spent the previous three seasons playing in Russia’s KHL.
Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk still says Jagr can contribute even at his advanced age. “He’s still a world-class player,” said Nieuwendyk. “For us to bring a player like that to our franchise is a big deal.”
Money is apparently a big deal to Jagr, who will get a nice bump from the $3.3 million he made last season in Philly. And signing over-the-hill veterans is apparently a big deal in Dallas. Just two days before the Jagr signing, Nieuwendyk and the Stars also signed 40-year-old Ray Whitney to a two-year, $9 million deal.
The Flyers don’t seem too broken up about losing Jagr. “I’m very happy for Jaromir,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren graciously said. “And wish all the best.” Before the Flyers and Russia, Jagr also previously played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals and New York Rangers. It’ll be interesting to see if he has anything left in the tank or loses interest playing for a mediocre team in the middle of the continent.
