The English are known for having impeccable manners, but they very inconsiderately start English Premier League soccer action at ungodly hours.  Several of Saturday’s games started at the ridiculous hour of 4:45 AM Pacific!  For that reason, I’ll go ahead and give you soccer betting play for Sunday.  You can say what you want about soccer, but take a look at the Tottenham Hotspur jersey in the picture that accompanies this post.  That’s a logo of a well known offshore sportsbook.  On the player’s uniform.  How cool is that?

We’ll take a look at a Sunday morning game between Tottenham Hotspur and Wigan in this writeup.  This game goes at 8 AM Pacific Time Sunday morning, which would be 11 AM on the East Coast so don’t miss out.

Wigan is in 14th place in the EPL but that’s not quite as good as it sounds.  Remember the whole ‘relegation’ thing in European soccer, meaning that the teams that finish in the three bottom spots get sent down to the Football Championship League.  This year Portsmouth is the doormat of the EPL with 16 points and they look to have a one way ticket to relegation land.  Currently, the relegation bound 18th and 19th spots are occupied by Bolton and Burnley.  In reality, there’s a logjam at the bottom of the table with only 3 points (and you get 3 points for a win in the EPL) separating 19th place Burnley and 13th place Sunderland.  In other words, none of these teams in this bottom pack are particularly good regardless of where they may be in the standings at this moment.

Tottenham Hotspur is in 6th place in the league and despite the fact that they’re 15 points behind first place Chelsea there’s a lot for them to play for in the top heavy world of English soccer.  The ‘Spurs’ as they’re informally known are only 1 point behind 5th place Liverpool and 2 points behind 4th place Manchester City.  While the difference between finishing 6th and 4th may seem irrelevant but they’re not–a 5th place finish gets the team a spot in Europa League play and a 4th place spot gives the team a chance to qualify for the Champions League.

Despite the fact that Wigan is currently in 14th, there’s quite a few reasons to think they’re much weaker.  For one thing, they’ve got a negative home goal differential.  That’s a big deal as there’s only 5 teams in the EPL who have allowed more goals than they’ve scored at home.   Wigan has a -4 home goal differential which is the third worst in EPL play–even bottom feeders Portsmouth have a better home goal differential.  This game is something of a ‘revenge spot’ after Wigan beat the Spurs 1-0 here last year.  The teams played earlier this season at the Spurs home field and the result wasn’t particularly encouraging for a Wigan fan–Tottenham Hotspur won 9-1.  Consider that the largest margin of victory *ever* in English football was 13 goals and that hasn’t been done in over 60 years and it was at a lower level of play.  The biggest margin of victory in the English Premier League since 1992 is 9 goals, making this a tie for the second worst blowout in 18 years.  It won’t be that ugly here, but Tottenham Hotspur will still win.
