What had originally looked like a slow day for sports betting will actually be pretty busy thanks to a rescheduled NASCAR race.  We’ll start out with some soccer betting that’ll go at 12 noon Pacific as the English Premier League’s version of ‘Monday Night Football’ features a struggling Liverpool side against a West Ham United team fighting to avoid relegation.  The game will be televised live in the US on ESPN2.

After a crazy weekend in the Premiership, the standings saw a significant shakeup but it didn’t really benefit Liverpool.  Manchester United’s stoppage time win combined with Chelsea’s loss to Tottenham Hotspur means that the battle for the top spot is down to a single point.  The Spurs have pulled into 4th with Manchester City and Aston Villa in 5th and 6th.  Arsenal is fairly secure in third place–not close enough to challenge for the top spots, particularly after a shocking upset loss to lowly Wigan this weekend but 7 points clear of the fourth place Tottenham Hotspur team.

Liverpool is mired in 7th–they’re 2 points back of 6th place Aston Villa but only 2 points ahead of 8th place Everton.  It’s been a very disappointing season for Liverpool supporters, and there’s plenty of rumors circulating that team manager Rafa Benitez will be the fall guy.  There’s also plenty of talk that he’ll be replaced by former Chelsea boss and current Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho, whose ego is only matched by his ability to produce winning soccer teams.  Mourinho is kind of like Bill Parcells or Jimmy Johnson–just hiring him would create excitement among the fan base, he can definitely produce a winning team, but he’s a headstrong guy that frequently clashes with management and league officials.

On paper, this is a bit of a mismatched and that’s clearly reflected in the wagering odds.  Despite Liverpool’s recent struggles they remain one of the best home teams in the Premiership with only 2 defeats on the pitch at Anfield this season.  West Ham, meanwhile, struggles on the road and have only one victory away from home this season.  Still, with all of the off field issues surrounding Liverpool–the aforementioned rumors about their manager, the sale of the team–as well as a good many on field problems its hard to see them fully focused for a matchup against one of the league’s bottom feeders.  And with West Ham United’s primary goal to avoid relegation, they’d be perfectly content with a draw.  They fought to a scoreless draw on this field last season, so its not without precedent.

Liverpool has struggled to score goals recently, and that’s not going to get any easier with Fernando Torres out for the year.    There’s a school of thought that this is a game where the home side will ‘take out their frustrations’ but that’s not always easy to do in soccer.  Liverpool has only scored more than 2 goals against West Ham once in their previous six meetings.  A more likely scenario is that Liverpool will do just enough to win a low scoring game.  No interest in laying -250 with Liverpool, but no real interest in West Ham at +750 either.  We’ll take what appears to be the only tenable wagering position on this game and go Under the total.

  1. I hope they(LFC) do get new owners and we get a few good quality attacking players to allay all further fears and to break the long wait for the league championship.
