More soccer betting action for the weekend, in this case for Sunday.  Unfortunately, the various countries around the world aren’t willing to hold their sporting events at odd times (for them) so that those of us here in the US can enjoy them at a reasonable hour.   So to make sure that you people are able to get down on this game which starts at the ungodly hour of 7:45 AM Pacific on Sunday morning I wanted to get it up early.

We cashed a nice winner on our Arsenal in our last soccer play and we’ll head back to the sportsbooks for Sunday action in the FA Cup.  FA is short for ‘football association’, in this case referring to THE Football Association, which is the oversight body for English soccer.  The FA Cup is one of those uniquely European events that we’d never put up with in the hierarchical US sporting scene.  Its essentially a knockout tournament where *every* professional soccer team in the country participates regardless of level.  That means it starts with 732 teams in all vying for the FA Cup.

They try to make it a little more workable by having the lower division teams face each other in qualifying events, and keeping the upper divisions out of the mix until later in the competition.  All of the teams below the League Two level fight it out amongst themselves until they’ve reached 32 teams.  These teams then match up against the League One and League Two teams in the next two rounds, after which the remaining teams are seeded against the Football Championship and Premier League teams.

Anyway, if you want to read more about the FA Cup you can do it here:

We’ll focus on Sunday’s game between Crystal Palace and Aston Villa

This is exactly the sort of strange matchup the FA Cup produces and gives us a nice wagering value.  Crystal Palace is ranked #19 in the Football Championship League (nominally the Triple A of English soccer) and is actually in a fight to stave off relegation.  Reading and Peterborough are well off the pace and are almost certain to be relegated, but that leaves a bunch of teams packed up just above them that are now in something of a ‘Russian Roulette’ game for their football futures.  Reading is currently in the relegation zone with 32 points, but a bunch of teams are just ahead of them–six teams have either 33 or 34 points including today’s FA Cup entrant Crystal Palace.

So how did Crystal Palace make it this far?  They managed to eliminate English Premier League also ran Wolverhampton in the previous round, drawing 2-2 away and winning 3-1 at home.  Now they set their sights on an even bigger target from the Premier League in Aston Villa.  Villa is ranked 7th in the EPL, but only 2 points separate them from 4th place Liverpool.  Since losing to Liverpool and Arsenal in late 2009, Aston Villa has gone undefeated.  They’re a very well balanced side that can score goals and keep the other team from scoring.  More significantly, they’re a team that takes these cup competitions very seriously (which isn’t always the case in European soccer).  We’ll gladly lay a small favorite price and expect Aston Villa to carve up an overmatched side.
