Trailing by one going into the final hole, Webb Simpson thought he had a “one in a hundred” chance of forcing a playoff. But Chez Reavie made his first bogey of the day on No. 18, and Simpson took advantage by sinking a 30-foot birdie putt to draw even, then beat Reavie on the second playoff hole with another birdie. The win comes just 15 days after Simpson’s first career PGA Tour win in Greensboro.

The victory catapults Simpson to the top of the FedExCup standings and to No. 14 in the Official World Golf Rankings. “I told somebody early this week that I feel like next time I was in contention, it’ll be a lot easier than Greensboro,” said Simpson. “And it wasn’t that way at all. It was just as hard. The shots and the putts were just as hard. I think it helped calm me down a little, but it was like I had never won a golf tournament before.”

Reavie’s closing bogey came after a bad wedge shot from 119 yards out. “That was really a bad shot, right there,” said NBC’s Johnny Miller. “That may be the easiest par on the whole PGA Tour, and he makes bogey.” The par-5 hole had a 4.525 scoring average on Monday, with only five bogeys all day and more birdies than pars. Still, the second place finish moved Reavie from 87th place to ninth in the FedExCup standings with just two events left.

Ernie Els and Geoff Ogilvy both needed final hole birdies to advance to the 70-man field at the penultimate playoff event, the BMW Championship in Illinois, which begins on September 15. The Tour Championship starts the following week.
