The Philadelphia Flyers had a three-goal third period lead at home, but couldn’t hold it against the San Jose Sharks. The Flyers led 4-1 with less than 13 minutes remaining in the game, but the Sharks exploded for three goals in less than four minutes to force overtime. The Sharks got the better of the Flyers in the shootout to escape Philadelphia with two points.

“We’ve been on the negative side of a couple of those this year where you’re comfortably in the lead and it doesn’t work your way,” Sharks head coach Todd McLellan said. “I don’t know if we had our A-game by any means, but a good win, and we’ll take it.”

Sharks goalie Antero Niitymaki made 31 saves and stopped every shootout attempt he faced to improve his record to 9-3-3. The Sharks scored twice in the shootout to beat Flyers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who fell to 14-4-3.

Joe Pavelski’s power play goal, his ninth of the season, tied the game 4-4 with 8:32 remaining in regulation. The equalizer came just 37 seconds after Logan Couture made it 4-3 with his 13th goal of the year. Couture also got San Jose’s first goal of the shootout.

At 14-9-4, the Sharks are tied for sixth place in the Western Conference. The Flyers (17-7-5) have fallen behind the surging Pittsburgh Penguins in the Atlantic Division, but still have the third-best record in the Eastern Conference.
