Sevilla’s Sebastien Squillaci signs with Arsenal

French International defender Sebastien Squillaci has left Spanish club Sevilla and joined Arsenal of the English Premier League. He completed his medical on and the signing was announced as official on Aug. 26th.  The centre-back said he wanted to move to London to play for fellow countryman Arsene Wenger.

He stated that French players feel it an honour to receive offers to play for Wenger and rarely turn them down. The defender knew the move was coming and prepared for it last week by asking Sevilla not to play him in the club’s Champions League game against Braga of Portugal. This means he didn’t get cup tied and can know play for Arsenal in the tournament.

The 30-year-old is expected to shore up Arsenal’s defence after they lost a lot of experience over the summer in Mikael Silvestre,  William Gallas, Philippe Senderos, and Sol Campbell.  Wenger stated in a press conference that his club were in need of a quality centre back with some experience Squillaci fits that bill perfectly.

Wenger believes the player is good in one-on-one situations, as well as in the air and on set pieces and should adapt quickly to the Premier League style. Squillaci will start training with his new club right away, but won’t play in the game against Blackburn on Aug. 28. He also played for Toulon, Lyon, and Monaco and Lyon in his career before signing on with Sevilla.

Arsenal now has just a few days left in the transfer window to address any help in goal as it closes on Aug. 31st.  Wenger has made two bids for Mark Schwarzer of Fulham, but have been turned down on both occasions.  The manager added that the club has four good keepers at the moment and he’d like them to build their confidence, but still didn’t rule out the chance of signing another one.
