Some of the French national players that took part in this summer’s World Cup fiasco in South Africa have been suspended by the French Football Federation for their behaviour. Chelsea striker was punished the heaviest as he’s been suspended for a whopping 18 games because of his tirade against former manager Raymond Domenech at half time of the team’s 2-0 loss to Mexico at the World Cup. Anelka was also sent home from the tournament after the incident.

French captain Patrice Evra, a defender with Manchester United, was suspended for five matches, winger Franck Ribery of Bayern Munich was hit with a three-match ban, and midfielder Jeremy Toulalan of Olympique Lyon was suspended for one game

The FFF said most of the suspensions were due to the team’s refusal to train for its final group A game in the tournament against South Africa. The bans definitely won’t help France in its quest to reach the 2012 European Championship in Poland/Ukraine under new manager Laurent Blanc.

Blanc, even though Anelka had withdrawn his services after he was sent home from the World Cup in disgrace having criticised Domenech at half-time of the country’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico. Ribery, Toulalan, and Evra are all senior members of the squad and are now paying for their decision to go on strike to show support for Anelka.

Former national team director Jean-Louis Valentin, who resigned after the incidents in South Africa, had said earlier that the players responsible should be given a second chance.  Valentin stated that the players had shown genuine remorse for what happened and took responsibility for their actions. He said the players apologized and were scarred and marked by the incidents, but they have to turn the page and carry on as it’s all in the past now.
