Seabass Got Paid

The Oakland Raiders are missing several key ingredients normally found on winning franchises. Things like sane ownership, astute coaching, competent quarterback play, receivers who can catch and stability along the offensive line are just some of what’s lacking for the silver and black. One area they don’t need assistance is in the footie department.

A year after locking up the best punter in the game, Shane Lechler, with the highest-paid contract for a punter in league history, cryptkeeper Al Davis did the same for kicker Sebastian Janikowski. Coming off a career season in which he booted 26-29 field goals, Seabass got rewarded with a four-year, $16 million contract.

Janikowski might be a fat drunk who enjoys bribing cops and dabbling with date rape drugs, but you can’t deny he’s got one helluva powerful leg. Last season he drilled a 61-yarder, six kicks over 50 and even attempted a 66-yarder.

The optimist will say, “our kicker is a weapon.” The pessimist will counter with, “our offense is so horrible we better have a good kicker.” Whichever side you fall, the Raiders have concluded that having a dominant pair of footies is the first step to building a dynasty.

Good luck with that, Oakland.
