Apparently, Scottie Reynolds isn’t quite done with his Player of the Year nomination.
A couple of weeks ago, a “John Wall versus Evan Turner for Player of the Year” discussion was going around the web, and I interjected the name Scottie Reynolds, with the thinking being he, too, should be part of the conversation.
This was met with a comment saying, among other things (all sic’d up for your enjoyment):
“I have to laugh when you put up Reynolds stats up against Wall or Turner. He is significantly lower than both in every category and only equal in pts. Not to mention your premise that his 3pt shooting should justify his being POY. If that’s the case Diebler should be a candidate or Hummel. This is an incredibly weak case and I believe Reynolds deserves a better advocate. Your case just doesn’t hold water, so I guess I’ll flush.”
Now, I can see why the commenter said that, because when comparing the all three, I made a point about saying Reynolds was clearly the better shooter, but, there’s more to it than that. Reynolds brings so much more to the table than just scoring: Try the will to win and the ability to carry his team to the finish line.
Need some proof?
Just watch how Reynolds finished off the ninth-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers, which was a road game for the Villanova Wildcats, by scoring 19 or his 21 points in the final 13 minutes of the game. Anytime you factor so heavily into such a big-time conference road win, obviously, your “Q-Rating” among these circles goes up, and with Reynolds, rightfully so.
In the past three games, Reynolds is averaging 20 points, five assists, three rebounds and almost two steals a game — not to mention, he’s the best player on one of the top five teams in the country. Frankly, if there weren’t guys like Wall and Turner running up and down the court this season, Reynolds would probably be the clear-cut favorite, and considering the way he’s played, especially as of late, that should be considered the correct choice.
