Adam Scott and Hunter Haas shared a one-shot lead after Thursday’s first round of the AT&T National at 4-under, as the Aromink Golf Club course played as tough as a traditional US Open. Only 28 of 120 golfers broke par on the first day of the tournament, with 14 of the 18 holes yielding average scores over par. Jhonattan Vegas was one of four golfers tied for third at 3-under.
As he did when he missed the cut at the US Open two weeks ago, Scott is playing with a famous caddie, Steve Williams, who usually carries clubs for Tiger Woods. Scott liked the way Aromink was playing on the first day. “I think they’ve got the greens probably where the U.S. Open would have liked them on a Thursday,” said the Australian. “It’s a great golf course and it’s in great shape,” Scott said. “The greens are perfect and they’ve got very generous fairways but severe rough, which is a nice balance.”
Robert Garrigus, whose T3 finish at the US Open was the best by an American, was one of three golfers two shots back at 2-under. “Anything under par today is great,’’ said Garrigus. “I don’t think double digits is going to win this week.’’
Erik Compton, who won on the Nationwide Tour last week to make headlines since he’s had two heart transplants, got off to a rough start here, shooting a 6-over 76 to fall 10 shots off the lead.
