The San Antonio Spurs cooled off the Miami Heat in five games to win the NBA championship’s best-of-seven series. The Spurs wrapped up the title at home on June 15 with a 104 -87 win. The Spurs have now won the championship a total of five times in franchise history with two of the victories coming against squads with LeBron James on them. In fact, James has gone 5-11 against the Spurs in NBA final contests and is 6-6 against all other teams. With the win, San Antonio also avenged last season’s final series in which the Heat beat them in the seventh and final game.

Twenty-two-year-old Kawhi Leonard was awarded the Most-Valuable Player Trophy for the finals and he chipped in with 22 points and 10 rebounds in the deciding game. He also went seven for 10 from the floor and three for four from the three-point line. He now becomes the fourth-youngest player to win the award. James, who was last year’s MVP, scored 17 points in the first quarter for the Heat and it looked like the Spurs could be in a bit of trouble with Miami jumping out to a quick 22-6 lead. However, it was all Spurs after that and they basically dominated the rest of the contest.

James finished the game with 10 rebounds to go along with his 31 points, but it wasn’t enough to help the Heat hang onto their title in their fourth consecutive visit to the NBA Final series. He said he wanted to inspire his Heat teammates, but obviously didn’t do enough. The last time the Spurs won the crown was back in the 2006/07 season when they took care of James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in four straight games. San Antonio clinched this year’s title by winning the last three outings against Miami by 19 points on average. They also set a league record by outscoring their opponents by a total of 214 points during the postseason.

Erik Spoelstra, the head coach of the Heat, said san Antonio played excellent basketball throughout the series, especially in the final three games and his squad simply couldn’t deal with it. He admitted that San Antonio deserved the title as they were the better club. James added that it’s disappointing to lose, but overall the Heat has won a pair of championships in the last four years and they can’t complain about that. He said they obviously want to win every year, but that’s just the nature of sports and he isn’t particularly proud of the way his squad played in the series against the Spurs.
