New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score in a 49-24 home blowout win over the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. Brees and the Saints broke the game open with a 34-second, 88-yard touchdown drive in the final minute of the first half that put the home team up 21-3 at halftime.
“Things were just clicking tonight and seemed like anything we tried, it seemed to work,” said tight end Jimmy Graham, who was on the receiving end of two of those Brees touchdown passes. “Tonight was definitely a fun night.”
The loss dropped the Giants a game behind the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East, and coach Tom Coughlin had to be disappointed his team couldn’t last two quarters against the Saints. “They put themselves in position with simple little throws,” said Coughlin. “We prepared well, but when we got in the game we didn’t cover well. When we don’t get to the passer, we have trouble.”
New Orleans put up 577 yards of offense against the Giants, the second-highest total in Saints history. Brees threw for 363 yards, giving him the league lead in passing yards and putting him on pace to break Dan Marino’s 1984 record for most passing yards in a season.
On Sunday, the Giants may face an even tougher offense when they host the 11-0 Green Bay Packers. The Saints will be in primetime again, hosting the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football.
