Winger Sadio Mane of Southampton set a new English Premier League record on Saturday, May 16 when he scored three goals in the space of just two minutes and 56 seconds. The 23-year-old from Senegal scored the first three goals of the match which saw Southampton hammer Aston Villa 6-1 at St. Mary’s Stadium on England’s south coast. The previous Premier League record for the fastest hat trick was set back in 1994 by Liverpool and England international striker Robbie Fowler, who scored three times in a span of four minutes and 33 seconds in a match against Arsenal. Mane’s hat trick was also the fastest in the top tier of English football since World War II.

Even though Aston Villa was thumped by the Saints, the Birmingham-based club has avoided relegation into the second-tier English Championship League after their brutal season. Villa managed to stay afloat for one more season after Hull City was beaten 2-0 by Tottenham Hotspur. Hull’s loss also means Leicester City will remain in the Premier League for the 2015/16 campaign following their 0-0 at Sunderland.

Getting back to Mane and his record-setting hat trick, the attacking midfielder said he wasn’t aware that his three goals were a new mark and said that winning the game was the most important thing on the day. He told the media, “We have a chance to finish in the Europa League spots. We will try to win the next game against Manchester City next weekend and why not?” Mane now has 10 goals and three assists in 29 appearances with Southampton this season.

Dutchman Ronald Koeman, the manager of Southampton, was thrilled for Mane and said it was an incredible feat to achieve. He remarked that if a player like Mane is given the time and space on a football pitch he will punish the opposition. The manager added that he was proud of the entire squad and hopes they can play that way during the season finale against Man City.

But while Mane’s hat trick was the quickest ever in the Premier League, which was launched back in 1992, but it wasn’t the fastest in English history. That record is held by James Hayter back in 2004. Hayter was playing for Bournemouth in a League Two match against Wrexham when he entered the match as a substitute in the 84th minute. Hayter then proceeded to score three goals in just two minutes and 20 seconds.
