Despite never leading in regulation, the Buffalo Sabres fought back from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits on Thursday night in Boston, eventually beating the Bruins 4-3 in overtime, thanks to a game-winning goal from Brad Boyes. The Sabres have now won four straight against the Bruins, who eliminated Buffalo in a first-round playoff series last year.
Boston has now lost three straight overall, including two overtime losses, but still picked up a point on second-place Montreal who lost in regulation to the St. Louis Blues. The Sabres are now off to a 4-1-1 start on their seven-game road trip, which ends Saturday in Toronto. Buffalo has moved up to seventh place in the Eastern Conference, with a two-point lead over the ninth-place Carolina Hurricanes for the final playoff spot.
The Sabres outshot the Bruins 45-29 in the game. “You see some strange shots when you give up 46 of them, or whatever it was,’’ Bruins goalie Tim Thomas said. “We had some stupid penalties, some questionable calls, but you can’t keep giving them chances.’’
The Bruins continue to be two different teams, struggling at home, but almost unbeatable on the road. Boston is now just 16-12-5 on home ice, but a league-best 22-8-4 on the road. Boston now heads out for a four-game road swing that starts with a visit to the New York Islanders on Saturday.
