Sabathia Loses Weight to Opt Out After Season

New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia has lost 25 pounds since last season ended with a disappointing ALCS loss to the Texas Rangers. He says it was “to try and help extend my career,” but he likely already has an eye on next offseason, when he can opt out of the final four years of his contract with the Yankees and try to cash in on the free agent market.

If Sabathia does opt out, he’d be leaving $92 million on the table — that’s an average salary of $23 million for the next four years. However, Sabathia will be 31 and his former teammate and fellow Cy Young winner Cliff Lee just got a five-year deal for $120 million (an average of $24m per). Sabathia had knee surgery after the Yankees were eliminated by the Rangers and says that was part of the reason for the weight loss. But knowing there would be more free agent dollars for a 295-pound pitcher than a 320-pound pitcher had to be in there too.

Sabathia said the biggest change in his diet was “Not eating Cap’n Crunch every day … I could eat a box at a time.” Well, there may have been a little more to his weight loss than that: “I got with a nutritionist and a chef and just kind of changed the whole diet, … pounds just started dropping off.”

In his two years with the Yankees, Sabathia has a 40-15 regular season record with a 3.27 ERA. He’s posted an ERA of 3.37 in each of the past five seasons.
