American boxer Roy Jones Jr., who has won world titles in five different weight divisions, including heavyweight, will be facing off against a fan in his next bout. The 47-year-old, who was recently granted Russian citizenship by President Vladimir Putin, will be holding a contest to pick his opponent. Those who are hoping to step into the ring against the boxing legend have been asked to send in 90-second videos to a website at URShow.tv. Once several potential opponents have been selected, the final opponent will be voted on by a Facebook poll.
The lucky or unlucky fan will be taken to Phoenix, Arizona for the contest and will be paid $100,000 if he or she wins. Reports state that this will be considered to be a sanctioned professional boxing match instead of an exhibition match and it will be a part of a pay-per-view internet card to be held on March 20th of this year. However, it’s unclear what kind of licensing an opponent will need and what types of testing he/she will have to go through.
Jones’ skills have definitely been on the decline lately, but he still owns an impressive record of 62-9 with 45 Kos. He’s been knocked out a few times during the latter stage of his career, which has mainly been taking place in Russia and Eastern Europe. Jones was last in action back in December when he was knocked cold in the fourth round by former world cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli of Wales. Jones will be taking on the fan at an event which will feature boxing, mixed martial arts, grappling, and wrestling.
The event is called UR Fight and will also be featuring Ken Shamrock vs Dan Severn in a mixed martial arts bout as well as Kurt Angle vs Rey Mysterio in a pro wrestling contest and Michael Bisping vs Chael Sonnen in a grappling showdown. So far, Bisping, Severn, Angle and Jones have all confirmed their involvement in the fight cars, but there are still a lot of details to be worked out and the local athletic commissions will have to get on board.
There’s no word if Jones’ opponent will be paid if he/she loses and if the person has to be a pro or amateur boxer, but applicants are being asked to list their fighting history. As of yet, the Arizona Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts Commissions say they haven’t discussed the proposed fight card, but will be doing so on February 25th. This doesn’t leave Jones much time to select an opponent though since the event will be held just a few weeks later.
